ABOUT THE ARTIST

Christopher Sweet is a contemporary Native American, multi-disciplinary artist. He is an enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and is also a descendant of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe of Minnesota. His art is deeply influenced by both tribal nations, which have key differences in their languages, historical locations, and often, their traditional ways of life.

Sweet was born and raised in Wisconsin, and lives in the Wisconsin Dells area. Christopher has been artistic since childhood and after high school, he studied briefly at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sweet has carried his artistic abilities throughout his life and after a chance solo exhibition opportunity in 2016, he felt inspired to pursue art as a career. Since that time, Christopher has shared his work in solo and group exhibitions in Wisconsin at the Overture Center for the Arts, the Rahr-West Museum, the Pablo Center at the Confluence and All My Relations Arts Gallery in Minnesota. Sweet’s works have been in juried art shows, commissioned for public and private collections, and he has created site responsive murals and art installations.

CREATIVE PROCESS

As part of Christopher’s creative process, he sets intentions of unity and healing, so as he creates those intentions become part of his work. Art has been part of a personal healing journey through adversity and his hope is that his works bring people together through the universal language of art. He is a true introvert, so art is an expression of his feelings, thoughts and values. The process of layering paints and creating textures symbolizes life’s complexity and depth of experience. Recurring themes in his work include cultural identity and reflection. His pieces capture traditional and contemporary native ways of life, of the past and present. Drawing inspiration from many aspects of his culture, including traditional regalia, dancing, family relationships, storytelling, and spiritual connectedness.
