ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hello! My name is Eleanor Laack, and I am a new artist based in Madison. I graduated from UW-Madison with degrees in Botany and Conservation Biology after growing up with a love for the outdoors, and my art reflects this passion for the natural world through designs of different species of animals and plants. I am pursuing a career in conservation working specifically with endangered species and research. I have been lucky enough to work at the International Crane Foundation for two years, helping to band, monitor, and conduct research on Wisconsin's two native crane species - Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes. While I love the more analytical, research side of this field, I also believe the natural world is art in of itself. I hope to illustrate the beauty of the creatures that inhabit this world through simplistic designs of each, focusing on making my art anatomically and taxonomically correct to blend both conservation and art into one.

CREATIVE PROCESS

I worked at the International Crane Foundation for 2 years on their field team, and the opportunity to work directly with the Sandhill and Whooping Cranes in Wisconsin is what prompted me to begin my stippling collection. I wanted to illustrate the more scientific part of studying these birds while also maintaining their grace and beauty, and began drawing each species using only its scientific name. From here, I began to work on stippling other species, specifically those that are endangered or facing major threats to their populations.
